RoundtableReturn to index of stories... |
Hello. I'm Beth Carroll. Welcome to this Friday Edition of New Hampshire Outlook -- where journalists from around the state weigh in on the TOP stories of the week. And what a week its' been. Condaleeza Rice testified on Capital Hill -- Governor Benson launched his internet drug link -- Gay Marriage and Adoption were debated in Concord --and, the flap over an Easter egg hunt ! Here to talk about all this -- from Concord: Josh Rogers from N-H-P-R, and Kevin Landrigan from the Nashau Telegraph. Here in the studio: Edith Tucker from the Coos County Democrat, James Pindell from PoliticsNH.com and, Jeff Feingold from the New Hampshire Business Review. |
Condaleeza Rice Return to index of stories... |
We begin with the much awaited testimony from National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice. Rice went before the national commission investigating the September 11th attacks on Thursday. She testified that the 9-11 attacks could not have been prevented. In 3 hours on the witness stand.Rice was unwavering in her support of the President and resolute in her position that there was no--quote- "silver bullet". |
holmes funeralReturn to index of stories... |
All this came -- in the shadow of more casualties in Iraq. This week Sgt. Jeremiah "Jay" Holmes was laid to rest at St. Mary New Cemetery in Dover. He's the first New Hampshire Army National Guardsman killed in Iraq. He died twelve days ago in a truck explosion. The 27 year old member of the 744th Transportation Company out of Somersworth leaves behind a wife and one year old son. Q JAMES: President Bush says Rice did a "terrific" job testifying before the 9-11 Commission. That's his spin. What's been the buzz on Rice's Testimony -- was it a plus for the president? Q KEVIN: John Kerry says President Bush has shown a "failure of leadership" in Iraq. Did the testimony bolster or mute his case? Q JEFF/EDITH: In Concord, the Senate gave its OK to a $100 bonus for NH soldiers involved in the war on Terrorism. House passed -- Is that likely to get swift passage? Any idea on the financial impact? |
jobs/kerryReturn to index of stories... |
Onto the ECONOMY: The long jobless phase of the recovery is over. March numbers -- showed the best performance in 4 years. They're calling it the so-called spring suprise. This comes --just as John Kerry hits the road trying to capitalize on what had been a stagnant job picture. Kerry says he will create 10-million jobs and offer tax cuts to those who need them. He comes to New Hampshire on Monday. Q James -- the March Numbers most have been like a gift from heaven for George Bush. What impact does that have on John Kerry's effort to paint the President as weak on the jobs front? Q JOSH: Kerry, is apparently going after the youth vote. Any thoughts on what we might see from John Kerry on Monday. |
Kerry/ChurchReturn to index of stories... |
Another Flap involving the Church and Politics. Boston's Archbishop Shawn O'Malley says pro-choice politicians need not bother to come to communion. Denial of communion for John Kerry has not been ruled out. He's planning to attend mass in Boston on Easter Sunday. |
gay marriage debateReturn to index of stories... |
"Gay Marriage" back in the news. This week, the house held a legislative hearing on the measure that would forbid the state from recognizing gay marriages and civil unions performed in other states -- and defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman. It was a highly charged debate. Q JOSH: Sparks clearly flying at this one. The Senate has passed the measure. Any sense on how the house might vote on this one. |
adoption debateReturn to index of stories... |
Adoption Rights taking center stage at the capital this week as well. A bill allowing adult adoptees access to their birth certificates was the subject of a public hearing -- bringing emotional testimony. Q Kevin, I know you covered this one. It was approved by the Senate. What seems to be the sentiment in the house? |
Canadadrugs.comReturn to index of stories... |
Governor Benson unveiled the state's internet link to Canada this week -- insisting profits, not safety was fueling the debate over prescription drugs. The link is strictly for consumers not the state to use in purchasing drugs. The move defies the FDA. The Governor has been trying to get a waiver from the federal government to buy cheaper drugs from Canada. Nothing new on the front. But, the Governor implied to me yesterday that he's willing to go to the mat on this one. Q KEVIN LANDRIGAN: It would appear that there is broad support for anything that helps to lower the price of prescription drugs -- and this stand is a "no-lose" situation for the Governor? Q JEFF FEINGOLD: Local Pharmacists still up in arms about this one? Any concerted effort to deal with this? Q JOSH: |
Governor Ad$Return to index of stories... |
State Primaries are only months away -- still no Democrats or Republicans officially stepping up to take on the Governor. MONEY.no doubt an issue. The Governor indicated yesterday that he has no intention of limiting his AD money this time around? Q JAMES: I understand it's been a VERY busy week on the Democratic gubernatorial campaign behind the scenes. Pray tell, what's happening? Q JOSH: George Bald tells me he's not interested. He's heading over to the Pease Tradeport any other names surfacing. Q KEVIN: The DES worker who cited Benson for illegally moving sand from his Rye Home was transferred. Some -- are calling that RETRIBUTION. The Governor says Nonsense. How Big a deal is this latest controversy? Q JEFF: The Governor continues to playdown the whole flap over Linda Pepin and her improper brokerage fee for the state's health-insurance contract -- is that an issue that will continue to HAUNT him? |
School Aid Return to index of stories... |
Education Funding -- was hotly debated before the House Finance Committee -- where a new bill reshuffles the same money -- and just changes the winners and losers in school aid funds. The Governor again urging the panel to come up with a 5-year funding plan to allow schools to plan their budgets. It didn't fly last time around -- Q KEVIN: Any chance of that happening this time around? How would the town of Berlin fare --under some of these proposed plans. Q Edith -- the town of Berlin really feeling the pinch. Where do they stand on the school funding issue? . |
easter egg hunt Return to index of stories... |
Then, there's the flap over the VIRTUAL Easter Egg Hunt -- at the state capital. Apparently, it's long been a bi-partisan tradition to host an easter egg hunt at the statehouse. But, this year, the Governor decided to launch a "virutal" egg hunt on the state website instead. Didn't go over well. Q KEVIN: What's all the fuss about? Q JOSH: The Governor reversed himself on this one? A good move? Q EDITH: Sounds like its part of the Governor's effort to reach out beyond the statehouse. Which usually goes over well in the north country. Q JEFF: State employees felt snubbed? Seems to be an indication of still rocky relations the Governor has with state employees Q JAMES: Rep Peter Burling - - says he was OUTRAGED! A rather strong reaction isn't it? |
Red SoxReturn to index of stories... |
Today marks the Home Opener for the Boston Red Sox. As one writer put it: "There's no seperation of church and state at Fenway" -- Opening day is a holy day of obligation inRed Sox Nation. The sox take on the Toronto Blue Jays. Q Any predictions on a winner? Q- Fans hoping this will be the year the "curse" is finally broken and the Red Sox win their first World Series since 1918. |

Overweight BillReturn to index of stories... |
-- Alarmed at the health risks of overweight children, the Senate today voted to require school boards develop policies on physical activity in their schools. The bill now goes to the governor. It does not require schools to have physical education programs, but it requires them to stress the importance of exercise. |
Berlin MillsReturn to index of stories... |
Some Good Economic News out of Berlin. Q Edith: A brighter picture I understand for the mills in Berlin and Gorham? |
